My Coaching Journey 

The name “How ya doin Coach” was born from the curiosity in understanding where coaches were at, what their challenges were and what they enjoyed about coaching – all important factors in building relationships and coaching success. Also, I wanted to create some useful resources and a learning platform to allow coaches that want to get better to grow and develop their coaching abilities. Coaches new to coaching often struggle with how to coach, I know I did, so I hope what I have created will be able to help coaches along their learning journey.  

Like many kiwi (New Zealand) kids in the 60s and 70s I aspired to be an ALL BLACK spending many long hours playing rugby with my older brothers dreaming of being the next Ian Kirkpatrick, Brian Lochore or Sid Going. Unfortunately, I never made it to that level, but it never stopped me playing the sports I loved and with some success. Along the way I was fortunate to have had some great coaches that influenced the way I played and later, how I coached. These coaches believed in me. They took the time to get to know me and helped mold my playing career in the right direction. They instilled in me several lifelong values including character, respect, work ethic and teamwork. I am forever grateful for these coaches. I hope I have tried to replicate these values in my own coaching career with the same influence on players and will continue to being the best that I can be. 

The sports that I played were Rugby, Basketball and Softball. While never playing at a national level I represented my province at colts (under 21) at all three sports and senior level in Basketball and Softball through the 1980s and 1990s. It was the early 2000s I took on a more active role in coaching kids, teenage, adult softball and progressed through different levels at club, provincial and at a national level with NZISA (New Zealand International Softball Academy).                                                                                                             
Outside of sport I have had the good fortune to end up in job that enables my drive to develop others. I am a long-life learner driven by passion and commitment to help shape and influence any learning culture. I pride myself on learning, adapting, and building my base of knowledge and skills as part of my own journey and love any opportunity to build the capability of others. My role as a Capability Advisor has given me valuable opportunity and experience in training, coaching, and facilitating.   
 
I’d rather be remembered for the impact I had off the field than what I accomplished on the field – for what the coaches I worked with learned and, in turn, taught their players. My approach has always been about making a difference in shaping how young athletes grow, both as players and people. I see myself as a teacher, someone who not only provides the tools and knowledge to succeed but also inspires others to pass those lessons forward. It’s not just about the immediate impact I can have; it’s about creating a ripple effect, where the lessons and values I share continue to influence coaches, players, and teams long after the final whistle blows. This is my legacy, the lasting difference made in the lives of the players through the coaches I’ve had the privilege of working with.
